This is a divine Edwardian diamond arrow brooch. In the form of an arrow with an array of rose-cut diamonds set to the feathers and the point, centrally set is a pearl (untested) surrounded by a circle of rose-cut diamonds with a pin and locking 'C' clasp fastening.
Arrows combined with flowers became popular in Victorian and then later Edwardian jewellery. The arrow is associated with cupid's arrow but also strength and direction, coupled with a flower symbolises a balance between strength and soft sentimentality. The combination often pairs the sharp, direct and protective nature of an arrow with the romantic or emotional meaning of a specific flower often serving as a token of affection or friendship. The arrow respresents the dart of Cupid and when combined with flowers signifies being struck by love. These brooches were often exchanged between lovers or friends to symbolise emotional sincerity, protective love and a desire to be remembered. What a wonderfully romantic gift this would make!
