This is an exquisite 19th Century 15ct Gold Bird and Heart Brooch. Stamped 15ct.
In Victorian jewellery, a brooch combining a heart and a swallow is a deeply romantic and sentimental token, usually representing everlasting love, fidelity and the promise of a safe return. Because swallows are migratory birds that always return to the same nesting spot they were used to symbolise a partner's vow to return home safely from a long journey, war or sea voyage. Swallows were believed to choose a mate for life, making them a symbol of faithfulness, loyalty and enduring affection towards partners and family. These brooches were often given by soldiers or sailors to their wives or girlfriends, especially during the Crimean War and World War 1. This brooch is a particularly attractive example of this type of jewellery.
